This group is an 8 week, 2 hour weekly therapeutic group designed to help adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse to begin and navigate the healing process. It is a structured group designed to help survivors learn more about trauma, how it affects you, decrease the stigma often associated with it, and then to develop skills to increase safety and stability within your daily life. Main themes will encompass normalizing the challenges survivors commonly cope with while instilling hope, learning and practicing emotion regulation skills, sensory regulation, symptom reduction, safety, and self-efficacy.
Upon the completion of Phase I, you will be able to:
1. Learn and understand the symptoms of childhood sexual abuse
• Recognize how they may affect you
• What they mean in direct relation to your personal experience
• Reduce shame, confusion, and sense of being crazy
2. Learn and practice effective skills to counter physiological and emotional arousal, reactivity, and intrusion.
3. Enhance daily self-reliance
Group therapy is a powerful treatment, as participants have the opportunity to challenge the shame about what happened, identify with others who have the had similar experiences, and gain needed peer support. Participation in group discussion or conversation is strongly encouraged for maximum benefit but not required. Trauma stories are not told in group. Prior screening is necessary to ensure safety, support, and readiness. Maximum group size is 8.
